Because of this nation's location in northeastern Africa, its history has been
greatly influenced by Egypt and Greece. The nation was invaded by Italy
twice (1880 and 1936). In the second invasion during World War II it was
England that freed Ethiopia from the grasp of the Fascist ruler, Mussolini.
In 1931, the last emperor set up a parliament and judiciary system. Drought
has attacked the people of this nation several times and the conflict between
the rebels and the marxist government leads to ignoring the issue of
starvation. In 1984, when food was donated to the needy of Ethiopia, the
food sat in storehouses while trucks donated to aid in the distribution of the
food were used to transport soldiers to fight rebels. The governmental
conflicts still contribute to the difficulties in fighting this drought.
